The Beauty of Hunting Down Your Dreams

What dream, or dreams, have you been chasing since you were a kid? Did you reach them? Did the beauty of the dream slowly disappear as life took you down its winding and unexpected paths? Or are you still relentlessly hunting your dreams down?

Since I can remember I have always wanted to live on a tropical island. I would daydream in college of one day wearing Tommy Bahama button-ups and enjoying life in paradise. You know the dream… sipping an island drink and enjoying a cigar while watching a beautiful Caribbean sunset. Sounds nice, right? The problem was, I thought that dream would only be possible if I was lucky enough to retire with a fat bank account, well into my 50s or 60s. Then something incredible happened after starting my career.

I had moved to Dallas, Texas from Florida to take on a new job after graduate school. At the same time, one of my closest friends moved to Saint Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands to be closer to his then girlfriend (and now wife). He earned a great job at a healthcare consulting company on the island. He told me there was an opening at this company that fit my skill set and background in industrial psychology and data science. Perplexed, I asked, “The Virgin Islands has jobs like that?” I naively thought it was a place to party and get away from the states. I had a promising job, a good network of friends and mentors in my new city. Why take a risk and uproot my life to live in a location where I literally knew two people, and a location I couldn’t find on a map at the time (the island is only 32 square miles)?

I was in my late 20s at the time. I still had 30 years or so before I thought I would be ready to move to an island! But the most audacious and rewarding dreams don’t have a due date or start date. Special doors open at certain times in our lives when we least expect it, and we are left with tough decisions. Those doors won’t open fully if you try to shyly tip toe in. Doors won’t open if you proceed timidly. The doors that keep our full potential locked inside, must be bulldozed down. If your dreams were an opposing team’s quarterback, protected behind an offensive line, then your will and your collective talents must be a juggernaut linebacker, charging full speed through the obstacles to tackle your target.

I listened to mentors, friends and family to get their opinion of what they would do. But at the end of the day our unique dreams belong solely to us, and the tough decisions to pursue them must be decided by us alone. I interviewed and after months of anxiously waiting, I finally earned the job and moved down to the U.S Virgin Islands.

It was the best decision of my life. From the decision to leap into my dreams, I was fortunate enough to find an amazing community unlike any other that has allowed me to grow personally and professionally in unimaginable ways. I met the love of my life, Angela, because of that decision. I own my first home because of that decision. And finally, because of that decision, Angela and I took the leap to create a start-up called The Tropical Treasure Hunt Company. Creating memorable and immersive adventures that bring people together has become my calling.

Has this entire 'dream-hunting' adventure been easy? Of course not. Has it included times of disappointment, pain, late nights, early mornings or even moments of self-doubt? Of course it has. Anyone who has fully committed to pursuing bold dreams knows their path was not simple or common. Will the journey be worth it? Absolutely! Regardless if we reach the original destination or not, we are more prepared to reach our full potential.

I hope you will experience our unique service which is the result of years of dreaming. My other hope is you will continue to hunt down your dreams, no matter how new or old they are.

The beauty of hunting down a dream is that when you finally reach it, other dreams take its place. Your story and adventure will continue to begin a new.
